The Jewish Condition, a collection of 28 essays on contemporary Judaism, has been published in honor of Rabbi Alexander M. Schindler, who is retiring in June 1996 as president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
Like the man it celebrates, the book is one of substance, conscience and compassion, reflecting the wide range of issues and concerns that animated Rabbi Schindler's illustrious career. Outreach to non-Jews, the role of women in Judaism, peace in the Middle East, Christian-Jewish relations, Judaism and medicine, and homosexuality in Judaism are among the topics covered in the volume. The book is edited by Aron Hirt-Manheimer.
Each section is prefaced with excerpts from Schindler's writings and speeches. The essays are by prominent intellectuals, scholars and politicians such as Shimon Peres, Carl Sagan, Harold Schulweis, Arthur Herztberg, Rachel Adler and William Cardinal Keeler, all of whom are personal friends of Schindler.
Rabbi Alexander Schindler has long been a preeminent figure of conscience and leadership, not only within the American Jewish community, but for all concerned with human issues around the globe, said Henry A. Kissinger in the book's tribute. He is a man of profound wisdom, integrity and loyalty.
Albert Vorspan comments in his introductory essay: Rabbi Schindler has identified himself with the liberal agenda of the day, including women's rights (especially the ordination of women), Soviet Jewry, civil rights, world peace, opposition to the death penalty, nuclear disarmament, a Marshall Plan for the poor, and gay rights.
